Below are a few tips to keep your carpet and home cleaner during the fall months.

Sweep Outside Entryways Often

This seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised how many people over-look it. Who wants to sweep every day anyway? But this is one of the first things you can do to prolong the life of your carpets and keep them cleaner, longer.

Use a Doormat

Doormats are your carpet’s first line of defense and they are more useful than we can see with our naked eye. They help scrub off debris from shoes keeping chunks of dirt, leaves and other particles out of your house.

Take Your Shoes Off

Ask yourself, is it time to enforce a no-shoes policy? This can be hard a decision, but removing your shoes at the door will make your carpet last longer and will keep your carpet cleaner between cleanings. If you decide to implement the new rule be sure to have a good location to take shoes off and an organized place to put them.

Throw Rugs Help Too

Strategically placed throw rugs can help cut down on the dirt in high traffic areas. They help trap large dirt particles too and will serve as a protective layer against foot traffic stains and wear.

Vacuum Habits

To protect your carpet, we recommend vacuuming high traffic and entrance areas at least twice per week and low traffic areas at least once per week. Before you start, be sure to empty your vacuum’s bag or canister and clean off those dust bunnies from the filter. Your vacuum will work most effectively if the bag or canister is no more than ¾ full.  An empty canister or bag will maximize your vacuums suction power and allow you to remove more dirt and grime. When vacuuming, if you vacuum slowly, you will be able to pick up more dirt. Slow passes will remove more ground-in dirt than several fast passes. If vacuuming regularly, two slow passes over high traffic areas and one quick pass over low traffic areas should be sufficient.

Planning to repair…

Before we arrive, you will need to find a ‘donor’ piece of carpet. Remnants are often leftover from the original installation. You might have extra stored for just this occasion!  Check your garage, attic, closets or basement for leftover pieces.

If you couldn’t find any extra laying around, you may be able to source a new remnant from a flooring store. You will need the brand name, color, and style name. Unfortunately, this can be difficult depending on the age of your carpet and availability from the manufacturer. Further, we find that sometimes the carpet color can vary due to the dye lot.

If you are unable to find a leftover remnant or buy it from your local flooring store, we might need to take it from hidden areas in the house. Hidden areas may include some of the locations below:

1. Closet
2. Water Heater Room
3. Under Staircase
4. Under-bed, desk or heavy piece of furniture that will most likely never be moved
